I awoke this morning to a single ray of sunlight, one that had battled its way through a blockade of stubborn foliage to pour a vintage light into the room—a light reminiscent of an old Polaroid picture, found buried deep in a sock drawer, that captured a smiley, sunny moment on a tropical vacation. As I lay with Tatiana, still asleep and curled up against me, I thought about how light is always more beautiful when it has to fight to be noticed, like sunlight fighting through the clouds after the rainstorm has passed.
